About Salisbury
Salisbury is a historic market town in Wiltshire on the edge of the Salisbury Plain. It is famous for Salisbury Cathedral which has the tallest tower in England*. It’s eight miles from Stonehenge which is a UNESCO world heritage site and, together with the Cathedral, attracts a large number of visitors to the area.
It is the only city in the county of Wiltshire. There are five rivers that converge on the city of Salisbury which has a population of 62,216 according to the 2011 Census**. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has several museums and stately homes to explore.
Is Salisbury a good place to live?
In 2014, The Lonely Planet voted Salisbury the 7th best city to visit in the world****. But as well as Salisbury being a great city to visit, it’s also a lovely place to live.
It has an array of different types of property from new builds on the edges of the city to period town houses in the centre. Vast town houses and detached houses range from £500,000 to £1million, but there are smaller flats and terraces from £110,000 to £250,000***. Therefore there are a variety of property types and sizes for those looking for a mortgage in Salisbury.
Crime in Salisbury is also lower than across the rest of Wiltshire and this is low compared to the UK in general*****. In 2015 it was also voted the happiest place to live in the UK******.
Is Salisbury a good place to bring up children?
Salisbury has a large number of schools. There are two Grammar schools (South Wilts Grammar School for Girls and Bishop Wordsworth Grammar) both of which have an “outstanding” rating from Ofsted. There are also several primaries with a “good” Ofsted rating including St Marks CofE, St Andrew’s CofE, St Paul’s CofE, St Martin’s CofE, St Osmund’s Catholic and Woodlands.***
Does Salisbury have good transport links?
Salisbury has great transport links. The train station is on the edge of the centre, and it takes 30 minutes by train to Southampton, just over an hour to Bristol and an hour and a half into London Waterloo.
By Road, it takes around an hour to Bath, 45 minutes to Basingstoke and Southampton and around an hour to the beach at Bournemouth.
